Still no salaries for new employees at Huize Ashiana
The employees at Huize Ashiana who were hired last year have not received their salaries for the past 7 months and therefore decided to send a letter to the president. They also held a union meeting to discuss the issue. Reports indicate that about 50 people were hired in August but who were never paid for their labor. The issue has already been presented to President Santokhi but he reportedly has not responded. The minister of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) is also aware of the current problem.
Last year it became evident that there were not enough employees at the state retirement home so officials decided to hire more people. The employees made it clear that they no longer have faith in the director of the retirement home because “it has become evident that she does not want to solve the problems.” They also accused her of being incompetent because she assigns people who lack the necessary skills and training to certain departments. The workers claim that a friends and family-policy is being implemented at Huize Ashiana.
“The situation has become unbearable because we have monthly expenses and because we must put food on the table for our families. We hope that the problem will be addressed soon now that the president has been informed of it. If not there will be a strike,” said the workers. One of the female employees explained that she has to keep borrowing money from her relatives in order to provide for her family. “I hope that we will finally receive our money.”
