Man sentenced to 6 years in prison
Ashwin R. was recently sentenced to 6 years in prison after having been found guilty by Judge Eric Rudge. District Attorney Reshmi Chotkoe demanded that the suspect be sentenced to 8 years for the aggravated assault.
On September 15th Ashwin assaulted R.A. with a machete. The victim sustained injuries over his entire body. Due to the severity of the injuries the left hand of the victim had to be amputated. A bystander who tried to stop the perpetrator also sustained injuries in one of his arms.
Ashwin told the court that he had attacked the victim, R.A., because he had caught him red-handed with his concubine. Other people had told him that the woman with whom he had three children was also in a relationship with R.A. R.A. who confirmed this when he was questioned by the police claimed that he and the concubine started seeing each other four months prior to the machete assault. On the night that the attack took place the perpetrator’s concubine called R.A. to tell him that she was home alone. R.A. then rushed to the suspect’s home. But shortly afterwards the suspect returned home. R.A. then fled out of the house via the backdoor but later he and the suspect bumped into each other near the FO Lashleystraat and the Doerga Sawhstraat.
R.A. told the police that the suspect started assaulting him with a machete. The concubine told the court that she and the defendant had been together for 5 years but that she also started seeing R.A. The defendant claimed that he had gone to the police to press charges against R.A. whom he claimed had assaulted and threatened him. “But the police did nothing. I have no more faith in the police which is why I took the law into my own hands,” said Ashwin.
