NICKERIE – The employees at  Huize Lunor which is located in  the Coronie District reportedly went on strike last week, because they have not received their salaries for several months. A month ago the employees at this retirement home had gone on strike but they put the strike on hold at the request of District Commissioner  (DC) Maikel Winter. 

They went to work again while the management team at the retirement home negotiated with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo). But the negotiations did not yield any results which is why the employees did not get their money. The employees made it clear that they want their money. Winter pointed out that he could relate to the union members because “one needs money to survive”. “Without money they can’t put food on the table for their families,” said the DC who added that he spared no efforts to get their money but that things went in a different direction. He can no longer ask the employees to keep working because now it is up to the ministry to make sure that the employees get paid. Winter explained that volunteers are pitching in to take care of the 23 residents at this retirement home.
