As of August 5th the Surinamese Water Company (SWM) will have no choice but to take firm action against clients who do not pay their water bills. It will no longer give extra time to them to pay the water bills but it will cut them off from the water network. Sources told Times of Suriname that the SWM is currently struggling to stay afloat. There are clients who must pay the SWM millions of Surinamese dollars. If clients do not pay their bills, the SWM lacks the funds needed to cover production and maintenance costs, salaries  and it also can’t make new investments. Last month the SWM sounded the alarm but the administration of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi still has not responded yet. Reports indicate that the government and the semi governmental companies do not pay their bills on time and that they reportedly must pay the SWM more than SRD 70 million.
