Army catches 9 illegal immigrants on Nickerie River

PARAMARIBO – The National Army on Thursday intercepted two fishing boats and arrested nine illegal immigrants on the Nickerie River. The illegal immigrants were handed over to the local police department. The police concluded that the fishing permits of one of the boats is expired and that all of the Guyanese  fishermen were illegally in Surinamese waters. The two fishing boats were confiscated and two suspects namely the 56-year-old captain R.D. and fisherman H.M. were taken into police custody while the other suspects were allowed to leave the police station.
