Dubois: “No obstacles for investigation during absence of Richano Santokhi”

Murwin Dubois who is a defense attorney recently explained that there is no obstacle to keep a criminal investigation from being launched against Richano Santokhi during his absence. Richano was an employee at the Surinamese consulate in Miami.

“There are no obstacles for an investigation to be launched during the absence of Richano Santokhi,” said Dubois who referred to several cases where the prosecution never waited to launch or continue the investigation. One perfect example of this is the case against the former minister of Finance, Gillmore Hoefdraad which is currently being heard on appeal in the absence of the defendant.
Investigations were also launched in other cases, even though the suspects, including Joel Martinus alias Bordo, Gerard van den Bergh, and Asha Badal, were never present. Dubois is puzzled by the fact that investigators have opted for a different approach in the case against Richano. He emphasized that Richano was banned from giving interviews but that he ignored the ban. “What else is needed? Do they want to know how he got the information regarding the attorney general?”
At the start of December the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Suriname launched a formal complaint against Richano Santokhi, the son of president Chandrikapersad Santokhi. The statements that he made during the interview are labeled as insults aimed at the head of state and his accusations that were aimed at the Surinamese authorities have done a lot of damage to the good name and reputation of the judicial authorities. After the interview had gone viral, Foreign Affairs Minister Albert Ramdin suspended Richano.
Dubios emphasized the fact that suspects have the right to refuse to cooperate with an investigation against them.
