Fireworks vendors violate rules in  Nickerie

NICKERIE – Although officials had made it clear that fireworks could be sold and lit from   December 27th until January 2nd  several fireworks vendors who run their business in the Nickerie District did not follow the rules. Several days before Christmas fireworks were already being sold and lit. The exploding firecrackers could be heard throughout the entire day on the first and the second day of Christmas. It also became clear that the police and local administrators were reluctant to enforce the rules although underage children also bought and lit fireworks and firecrackers without any adult supervision. This situation has raised many questions. The residents of the nation’s rice district are asking themselves if the rules no longer apply. They were also shocked to hear that a toddler had become the first victim of fireworks in Nickerie on the second day of Christmas.  The residents from Nickerie pointed out that if the rules are not enforced young children and others risk getting injured and disfigured by fireworks. Firecrackers could also be heard exploding in the Para District prior to Christmas. Concerned citizens pointed out that the Fire Department must also increase its surveillance in the remote districts every December.
