Investigation launched to determine cause of Desi Bouterse’s death

The judicial authorities in Suriname recently launched an investigation to determine the abuse of death of former president Desi Bouterse. Relatives of Bouterse who is also the former chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP) claimed that he passed away on December 25th. Investigators are determined to piece together the circumstances surrounding the death of Bouterse as it is still unclear where and how he died. They also want to find out who transported his body to his residence located at  Leonsberg. The official police report states that the death of Desiré Delano Bouterse was reported to the authorities around 5:11 on December 25th. His body had been brought in an unknown vehicle from an undisclosed location to his home address by a group of unknown people. The authorities were looking. Bouterse for nearly a year. Last Sunday the police raided his home and several days after that he passed away at an unknown address. “It is of the utmost importance to get to the bottom of this,” a police official told Times of Suriname. After the authorities had been informed of the death of Bouterse the police went to his house where a housemate claimed that his body had been delivered. The police inspected the body before summoning a doctor. The doctor claimed that there were no visible wounds or injuries on the body.

The body was seized by the authorities and taken to the morgue for an autopsy.

“The family wants the body of Bouterse as soon as possible so that they can start making preparations for the funeral. Until then we will convene in OCER, the headquarters of the NDP, every day,”  Ricardo Panka told Times of Suriname. Panka who is a former legislator added that people can sign the condolence register at OCER. “We gather here everyday to support each other in these difficult times.”
