Personnel of police force’s armory arrested

PARAMARIBO – All of the people who worked at the armory of the Police Force Suriname (KPS) have been arrested. Reports indicate that 4 police officers are suspected of having sold weapons to criminal organizations.

The disappearance of weapons was detected after several weapons were intercepted and seized in neighbouring Brazil. Brazilian investigators found out that the weapons that were seized belonged to the Surinamese police force.

Justice and Police Minister Kenneth Amoksi found it awful that the police have armed criminals. “Arming criminals is unacceptable. You are giving weapons that criminals will use to shoot at your colleagues,” said Amoksi who confirmed that  the 4 people who worked at the armory are currently in police custody.

It is still not clear what kind of weapons and how many weapons have actually been sold. Investigators found out that a criminal network is behind the disappearance of weapons and that high ranking police officials are also involved. Minister Amoksi has instructed the police commissioner to take firm action against the rotten apples which are in the corps
