President intervenes in EBS dispute

President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk will meet with the management team of the Energy Company Suriname (EBS) on Thursday in an attempt to resolve the dispute between the executives and the union. The back-and-forth between the management team and the union has been ongoing for the past couple of weeks and has already started to affect the nation. When workers of the EBS attend union meetings, they do not respond to calls about blackouts. The dispute started when management fired the union chairman, Marciano Hellings. The chief executive officer felt insulted by something Hellings had posted on social media. Although Hellings apologized, management did not feel satisfied and gave him the boot. The union is currently furious because its chairman is no longer allowed to visit the EBS office for talks, and management has refused to accept the Labor Inspection’s objection regarding its decision to fire Hellings. Natural Resources Minister David Abiamofo confirmed on Tuesday that the management team at EBS would meet with the president and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk.
