President wants university in Nickerie District

PARAMARIBO – “It is time to establish a university in Nickerie,” said President Chandrikapersad Santokhi who added that a study must be carried out to determine if there is a big demand to open a university in the Nickerie District next year.

The head of state explained that officials must find out how many students from the nation’s rice district want to go to the university. But officials must also find out how many educators are available. If there are enough students and educators the university could open for business next year. “We could open our first faculty in Nickerie even if we only have 15 students,” said President Santokhi who added that he is convinced that this faculty will eventually expand. Reports indicate that the residents from the Nickerie District have always wanted to have a faculty or university in their district. There are already a few institutes for higher education in the Nickerie District. Parents would no longer have to pay a lot of money on housing for their children who have to move to the nation’s capital so that they can go to the Anton de Kom University which is currently the only university in Suriname…[+]
