“Security guards are no guarantee against break-ins at schools”

PARAMARIBO – Education, Science and Culture Minister Henry Ori recently assured the nation that security guards are being hired to guard the nation’s schools. “Sometimes there are security guards at the schools but they don’t see anything so having security guards is no guarantee against break-ins. We know that the security at the schools is not adequate and people will once again be infuriated by my statements but it is the truth,” said Minister  Ori who added that many security guards do not do the job that they were hired to do. “Many security guards call in sick and have letters from medical specialists but nobody checks if they are actually sick. One could keep hiring security guards but that will not produce good results,” said Minister Ori who added that the ministry would rely on technology by installing security cameras especially at the big schools where more than one security guard is needed. Minister Ori explained that the ministry also needs funds to finance its plans. If 600 schools must be provided with security systems, it will have to be done in phases.
