Teachers disappointed in unions

PARAMARIBO – It is understandable that the nation’s teachers are extremely disappointed in their unions for failing to take action after their salaries were frozen. The unions did not lift a finger to help them although the teachers’ pay their membership fee at the end of every month. The teachers are puzzled by the fact that the unions are nowhere to be found when it comes to addressing this issue. “I had to borrow money from my parents to pay the phone bill because my children need access to the internet for their homework,” said a teacher. Several teachers pointed out that they are uncertain about their job. The teachers who went to the Ministry of Home Affairs (Biza) were told that no money would be transferred to bank accounts until further notice. Officials explained that they require the green light from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture before they can transfer the money. “I have already started looking for a job elsewhere because I have lost hope. They want to fire the people who did not get registered. I am tired and I have run out of patience. The bills keep piling up,” said another teacher with tears in her eyes. A third teacher pointed out that she has nobody to help her pay the bills and buy food. “I do not understand why they messed with our salary. If they want to fire us, they must inform us now instead of waiting until the summer vacation.”…[+]
