President Trump threatened Thursday to withhold federal funds from University of California at Berkeley for canceling a speech by Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos after violence broke out.

“If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” Trump tweeted shortly after 6 a.m. Trump’s threat came even though the university condemned the violent protests, and cited safety concerns for its cancellation. Protesters on campus smashed windows and threw smoke bombs at the student union building Wednesday night before the scheduled speech by Yiannopoulos, a self-proclaimed troll from the far-right news website.
