SURINAME – The deputy director at the Offender Care Division at the Ministry of Justice and Police, Paulus Pinas, is content with the work that the inmates are doing. He and District Commissioner Jerry Miranda on Tuesday visited several locations in Paramaribo North to see what the inmates were doing or what they have done. DC Miranda explained that ‘hiring’ inmates for various projects is much cheaper than hiring contractors. The inmates reportedly remove weeds from vacant plots and cemeteries but they also embellish bridges and repair roads. The inmates are currently busy at a abandoned sport facility in Geyersvlijt that has become overgrown with weeds. DC Miranda indicated that he would ask the minister of Sports and Youth Affairs to ask what the “minimum is that can be done there.” Bridge railings are reportedly also being given a new coat of paint…[+]
