ITALIЁ – In Italië, Oostenrijk, Roemenië en Slowakije zijn 22 mensen gearresteerd op verdenking van het doorsluizen van honderden miljoenen euro’s aan post-corona-steunfondsen van de EU. Dat geld was bedoeld om de economie in Italië na de coronapandemie op weg te helpen, zegt het Europese Openbaar Ministerie (EOM).
Dat geld is volgens de aanklagers tussen 2021 en 2023 weggesluisd. De verdachten zouden valse bedrijfsbalansen hebben gebruikt bij het aanvragen van de steunfondsen. Daarbij zouden fictieve kleine en middelgrote bedrijven zijn gebruikt die zogenaamd internationaal wilden uitbreiden.
De verdachten zouden hebben samengespannen met een netwerk van accountants, financiële dienstverleners en notarissen om het geld over te maken naar bankrekeningen in Oostenrijk, Roemenië en Slowakije. Volgens het EOM gebruikten de verdachten geavanceerde AI-software, VPN-verbindingen en buitenlandse cloudservers.
Het EOM zegt dat de financiële politie in Venetië voor meer dan 600 miljoen euro aan tegoeden heeft bevroren op bevel van de rechter in een vooronderzoek naar de fraude. De financiële politie in de Italiaanse stad zegt dat er ook beslag is gelegd op luxe appartementen, villa’s, cryptovaluta, Rolex-horloges, Cartier-sieraden, goud en luxe auto’s.
Ook zijn er huiszoekingen gedaan in de woningen en bedrijfspanden van de verdachten. Met de steun van de politie in andere EU-lidstaten zijn de 22 mensen aangehouden, zegt het EOM. Israël ontslaat twee militairen vanwege dodelijke aanval op hulpverleners
ISRAЁL – Het Israëlische leger heeft twee militairen ontslagen vanwege betrokkenheid bij de aanval waarbij zeven hulpverleners om het leven kwamen. Israël spreekt van “een ernstige fout”.
Uit onderzoek blijkt dat de bestuurders van de drones een hulpverlener aanzagen voor een schutter van Hamas. De militairen dachten te zien dat hij een vuurwapen vasthield, maar dat bleek een tas te zijn. Nadat de man met de tas in een auto van de hulporganisatie was gestapt, beschoten de militairen dat voertuig met de drones.
Kort daarna werden ook de andere twee voertuigen uit het konvooi beschoten. Bij de aanval kwamen zeven medewerkers van hulporganisatie World Central Kitchen (WCK) om het leven. Zij waren afkomstig uit verschillende landen.
Drie andere militairen hebben een reprimande van de legerleiding gekregen vanwege hun rol bij de aanval. De fout werd volgens het onderzoek veroorzaakt doordat het doelwit verkeerd werd geïdentificeerd, militairen verkeerde beslissingen namen en de standaardprocedures niet werden gevolgd.
WCK noemt het ontslag, de erkenning van de fouten en de eerdere excuses van Israël “belangrijke stappen vooruit”. Wel eist de hulporganisatie een onafhankelijk onderzoek naar de aanval. “Het Israëlische leger kan niet geloofwaardig zijn eigen fouten onderzoeken.”
De hulporganisatie heeft na de aanval besloten om te stoppen met de hulpoperatie in Gaza. WCK hielp met het verspreiden van maaltijden die met schepen werden aangevoerd. Een schip dat onderweg was naar Gaza is deze week omgekeerd. (NU)…[+]
Jongen verdacht van doodsteken dakloze in Dortmund
DUITSLAND – Een dertienjarige jongen wordt verdacht van het doodsteken van een dakloze man in Dortmund. De twee hadden voor het steekincident een woordenwisseling, melden de politie en openbaar aanklager in de West-Duitse stad.
Een video op een telefoon zou aantonen dat het kind de man afgelopen donderdag heeft doodgestoken. Het 31-jarige slachtoffer kwam door meerdere messteken om het leven. Diezelfde avond werden vier kinderen opgepakt en korte tijd vastgehouden. Bij de plaats delict is een mes, het vermoedelijke wapen, gevonden. De politie en openbaar aanklager meldden eerder dat de kinderen de man bij toeval hadden ontmoet.
Het kind dat de man zou hebben doodgestoken, kan door zijn jonge leeftijd niet strafrechtelijk verantwoordelijk worden gehouden voor het geweld. De drie andere kinderen zijn 13, 14 en 15 jaar oud. (De Telegraaf)…[+]
Guyana borrowed US$ 23.27 million to buy two airplanes for the price of four
The Government of Guyana has borrowed a US$ 23.27 million loan from India to buy two Dornier 228 airplanes from an Indian Aeronautics Company when they could have gotten four for the same price.
According to reports, the two aircraft arrived on Easter Monday, some 16 days after a loan agreement was signed between Guyana’s Ministry of Finance and the Indian EXIM (Export-Import) Bank. The airplanes were purchased from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
On March 10 last year the Indian government purchased six similar planes for its air force from the same company at a price of US$31.9 million. The Defense Ministry of India was the one who made the announcement and it was widely reported on Twitter and multiple media houses.
One excerpt from the Economic Times, a media company, said: “The Defense Ministry sealed a deal with HAL to procure six Dornier aircraft at a cost of Rs 667 crore for the Indian Air Force.
Rs 667 Crore is equivalent to US$31.9 Million and that means that the Indian government had purchased 6 of the same aircraft from the same company at a price of US$5.3 million for one. At this price Guyana could have purchased four of these aircraft with US$23.27 million and still have over U$2 million left over for other expenses.
Opposition Member of Parliament and General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union, Coretta McDonald on Tuesday during her online show a called “Advancing Cause” had alleged that perhaps the Indian government might have purchased these planes from the company and then resold them Guyana. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo at his weekly party press conference refuted her claims calling it false.
According to him Guyana bought the aircraft directly from the company at price of US$8 million dollars for one (US$16 million for the two) and spent the remaining U$7.27 million on spare parts, training of Guyanese pilots and delivery of the planes to country. A cost of US$8 million is still almost three million US dollars more than what the Indian Government had purchased the same aircraft for. “These are aircraft that are new”, Jadeo said before giving a breakdown of how Guyana spent the loan that it has to pay back with interest. “That is 16 million dollars, we then bought 6.3 million dollars in spares for these two aircraft including reserve engine propellers etc. and then about another million dollars in training of 19 persons including the pilots, engineers, etc., technicians”
He continued that part of the loan was also spent to deliver the planes to Guyana and bring a team from India to work with Guyana Defence Force pilots. According to Jagdeo the government got a good deal from India with a “cheap interest rate”. He said too the planes are suitable for Guyana’s needs. “They can carry 19 passengers, and fly directly to Barbados… you don’t have to even refuel can they can land on almost all of our airstrips”, Jagdeo said. Rechter in Georgia weigert zaak wegens verkiezingsfraude door Trump stop te zetten
VS – Een rechter in de Amerikaanse staat Georgia heeft donderdag een verzoek van presidentskandidaat Donald Trump afgewezen om een zaak rond verkiezingsfraude tegen hem om grondwettelijke redenen te staken. Dat melden Amerikaanse media.
De advocaat van Trump had verzocht om de strafrechtelijke vervolging van de voormalige president te laten vallen op grond van het eerste amendement van de Amerikaanse grondwet, dat onder andere het recht op vrije meningsuiting beschermt.
Rechter Scott McAfee wees het verzoek af. “Zelfs belangrijke politieke verklaringen zijn niet tegen strafvervolging beschermd, wanneer ze vermoedelijk voor criminele activiteiten ingezet worden”, oordeelde de rechter. Enkel een jury kan volgens hem beslissen of er achter de verklaringen van Trump en andere beklaagden een criminele bedoeling zat.
Trump en veertien anderen zijn in Georgia aangeklaagd voor pogingen om het resultaat van de presidentsverkiezingen van 2020 in deze staat om te draaien. De Republikein verloor die stembusgang van de Democraat Joe Biden en probeerde op verschillende manieren om de uitslag om te keren, onder meer door druk uit te oefenen op topfunctionarissen.
Het is een nieuwe tegenslag voor Trump. Die kreeg woensdag van een rechter in New York al nul op het rekest op zijn verzoek om het zogenaamde zwijggeldproces tegen de oud-president verder uit te stellen. Die zaak moet 15 april van start gaan.

14 killed in head-on collision in southwest Bolivia
LA PAZ – A total of 14 people were killed when a minibus and a tractor-trailer collided head-on on a highway that links the Bolivian departments of Oruro and Potosi, local authorities said.
“The driver of the tractor-trailer, which was transporting salt from Potosi, presumably fell asleep due to fatigue, losing control of the vehicle,” Julio Larrea, Oruro’s director of transportation and road safety, told local media.
“A long braking mark was observed and he was unable to return to his lane, which caused the head-on collision with the minibus,” he added.
The accident took place in Vichuloma, a town at the border exit between Oruro and Potosi, said Larrea.
He added the death toll could rise due to some of the badly injuried, including a passenger on the minibus and another who was riding in the trailer, both of whom were transferred to nearby hospitals.
The official called on motorists to respect speed limits to prevent similar tragedies, noting that accidents on that highway are frequent due to speeding. (Xinhua)…[+]
Amerikaan in nieuw Russisch propagandafilmpje blijkt thuis gezocht te worden voor bezit kinderporno
RUSLAND – Een Amerikaan die de hoofdrol speelt in een nieuw Russisch propagandafilmpje, blijkt in de Verenigde Staten gezocht te worden voor het bezit van kinderporno. Dat heeft onafhankelijke Russische nieuwssite Agentstvo ontdekt.
In de video wordt naar de man verwezen als “Will, een voormalig Amerikaans soldaat”. Hij is te zien terwijl hij een contract tekent bij het Russische leger in de stad Chanty-Mansiejsk in het westen van Siberië.
De man blijkt Wilmer Puello-Mota te zijn, een 27-jarig ex-gemeenteraadslid uit Holyoke in de Amerikaanse staat Massachusetts. Hij werd in 2020 in verdenking gesteld van het bezit van kinderporno. Daarnaast wordt hij ook beschuldigd van het vervalsen van documenten en obstructie van het gerecht.
Normaal zou zijn proces in januari van dit jaar van start gaan. Hij daagde echter niet op voor zijn hoorzitting en daarop heeft een rechtbank in Rhode Island een arrestatiebevel tegen hem uitgevaardigd.
Onder meer Roeslan Ostasjko, de hoofdredacteur van de pro-Russische nieuwssite PolitRussia, deelde de clip op Telegram. Er is ook een video waarin de man te zien is in de door Rusland veroverde Oekraïense stad Avdiivka. Hij loopt er rond met een Amerikaanse vlag en drukt er zijn steun uit voor Rusland. Op dat moment – in februari – was hij nog gewoon als vrijwilliger aan de slag bij het Russische leger.
In de eerste video zegt hij dat hij veel meer sociale voordelen heeft nu hij een contract heeft getekend bij het Russische leger. Hij zou bij de ondertekening eenmalig 745.000 roebel (€7.431) gekregen hebben en daarbovenop verdient hij 150.000 roebel (€1.496) per twee maanden dat hij in dienst is. (HLN)…[+]
Russische gouverneur neergestoken, rijdt zelf nog naar ziekenhuis
RUSLAND – In Rusland is de gouverneur van Moermansk ernstig gewond geraakt nadat hij door een man werd aangevallen met een mes, zo melden lokale media donderdagavond laat.
Gouverneur Andrej Tsjibis van de Kremlinpartij Verenigd Rusland had in de stad Apatity op het schiereiland Kola een ontmoeting met burgers gehad. Toen hij het gebouw verliet, werd de 45-jarige politicus aangevallen door een man met een mes. Hij kreeg een messteek in de buik. Tsjibis werd geopereerd, maar zou niet in levensgevaar verkeren.
De ordediensten konden de vermoedelijke dader arresteren. Naar het motief is het nog raden. Aanvallen op vertegenwoordigers van het machtsapparaat zijn zeldzaam in Rusland.
Volgens lokale media zou de hoofdverdachte een 42-jarige werknemer van de Russische spoorwegen zijn die verklaard zou hebben dat een stem in zijn hoofd hem had bevolen om de gouverneur aan te vallen.

Few changes after Kuwait holds first parliamentary election under new emir
KUWAIT – Opposition politicians maintained a majority in Kuwait’s parliament, results have shown after the country’s third parliamentary vote in as many years.
The polls were the first to be held under new Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah who came to power late last year after the death of his half-brother and predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.
The official KUNA news agency said yesterday that opposition candidates had won 29 seats in the 50-member assembly, matching the outcome of last year’s election.
Results also showed a single female candidate was elected, the same as in the previous parliament, while Shia Muslim legislators secured eight seats in the predominantly Sunni Muslim country, one more than last year. Seats for the Islamic Constitutional Movement, which represents the Kuwaiti branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, fell to one from the previous three.
Overall, the makeup of the new parliament is very similar to the outgoing one, with all but 11 politicians retaining their seats.
“No radical change was expected in the results,” said Bader al-Saif, assistant professor of history at Kuwait University.
“This is one of the lowest change ratios,” he told AFP news agency.
Turnout was about 62 percent after polling stations closed at midnight, the information ministry said.
Parliamentary elections have become an annual occurrence for Kuwait, which has seven percent of the world’s oil reserves and the monarchical Gulf’s most powerful elected assembly.
However, disputes between the national assembly and the royal-appointed cabinet have caused constant deadlocks, delaying much-needed reforms. The vote was the third since 2022 and the fourth in five years.
With little change to the parliamentary lineup, the political impasse is expected to continue, according to al-Saif.
“A new showdown is in the making,” he said, adding that “some of the new faces are quite outspoken.”
Sheikh Mishal has been eager to push through economic reforms in what observers say is an apparent attempt at helping the OPEC producer to catch up with Gulf neighbours which have been implementing ambitious plans to wean their economies off oil.
The 83-year-old took aim at the last National Assembly and the government in his first speech before parliament after taking office in December, saying they were “harming the interests of the country and its people”.
The government of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nawaf resigned hours after the speech. Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah formed a new government that included new ministers of oil, finance, foreign affairs, interior and defense.
Sheikh Mishal then dissolved parliament on February 15, less than two months into his tenure. His decree cited the assembly’s “violation of the constitutional principles” as a reason for the dissolution.
The new parliament will be tasked with approving the emir’s choice of crown prince, Kuwait’s future emir. If the assembly takes the unprecedented step of rejecting his heir, Sheikh Mishal will submit three candidates for parliamentarians to choose from. (Al Jazeera)…[+]
Several residents evacuated as wildfires ravages Santa Mission
The ongoing fire crisis in Santa Mission (also known as Santa Aratak) in Region Three has led to the evacuation of several residents in the area in the wee hours of last Thursday.
According to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), the ongoing fire in the Mission has reached a critical point, rendering it impossible for firefighters to access the affected areas. As a result, the focus has shifted to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents through swift evacuation measures.
The Fire Service said too that the dense smoke emanating from the fire has prompted the evacuation of 38 individuals from Santa Mission and the neighbouring village. Due to the severity of the situation, 34 evacuees found temporary shelter at the Timehri Primary School which was established and managed by the Civil Defense Commission, while the remaining four were accommodated by their relatives.
Kaieteur News understands that the evacuation was done with support from the Guyana Defence Force who is part of the Joint Service mission to response to the fire there. “The safety and security of the affected residents remain our top priority. Firefighters, members of the Joint Services and volunteers are working tirelessly to manage the situation and provide necessary support to those impacted by the fire,” the GFS noted.
During his press conference, Vice President (VP) Bharrat Jagdeo noted of the health problems arising from the numerous fires and related that the Health Ministry is fully aware and has since mobilized to address the situation. The VP urged that anyone experiencing any health problems as a result of the smoke should seek medical attention immediately.
Kaieteur News had reported that within the last week the Berbice area (Regions Five and Six) have experienced 1000 wildfires. The GFS had reported that having done an aerial assessment in Region Three and Four on Wednesday, the Joint Service team observed several small pockets of active fires in various areas, including La Bonne Intention, Buxton, Perseverance, and a large fire at Friendship.
It was reported by the Home Affairs Ministry that these fires, stemming from spontaneous combustion, human-induced land clearing, and waste destruction, have prompted urgent calls for citizens, particularly land developers, contractors, and farmers, to cease burning garbage and other waste materials. As the dry season prolongs, the risk of fires escalating quickly and becoming uncontrollable heightens. The ministry stated that forecasts indicate the dry spell will persist until the end of April, so citizens are urged to take all necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks.
