PARAMARIBO – De drie Chetak helikopters van het Nationaal Leger zijn zaterdag na een grote onderhoudsbeurt officieel weer in gebruik genomen. Met de helikopters kan de Surinaamse Luchtmacht weer mobiel zijn in de lucht.
De helikopters zullen volgens minister Krishna Mathoera van Defensie voornamelijk worden ingezet voor vele militaire operaties en het terugbrengen van het veiligheidsgevoel. De bewindsvrouw gaf daarom aan heel blij te zijn dat de helikopters weer in gebruik zijn. “Door de mobiliteit in de lucht kunnen wij eindelijk weer verkenningen uitvoeren en Suriname beschermen”, zei de bewindsvrouw. Zij bedankte het team van zowel Suriname als Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) uit India en hoopt dat deze coöperatie met India als een van de belangrijke partners, jarenlang gecontinueerd zal worden. Als teken van waardering kregen de teamleden van HAL een certificaat overhandigd.
De drie Chetak helikopters werden in 2009 en in 2015 in gebruik genomen. De financiering kwam uit de kredietlijn van India. In 2019 is er een onderhoudscontract getekend met de leverancier, het Indiase bedrijf HAL. Daarbij zijn er afspraken gemaakt om de helikopters periodiek na een aantal vlieguren te onderwerpen aan een onderhoudsbeurt en inspectie. Dit was de derde grote onderhoudsbeurt waaraan zowel technici van HAL als de Luchtmacht hebben samengewerkt.
De ambassadeur van India, Shankar Balachandran, gaf aan dat hij zich vereerd voelt om deze gelegenheid bij te wonen en waardeerde de professionaliteit van de organisatie en de samenwerking met India. “Deze missie is van belang en daarom zullen wij deze continueren. Auto botst tegen fietsenzaak
PARAMARIBO – Aan de Indira Gandhiweg is gisterochtend een voertuig tegen een fietsenzaak gebotst. Drie personen raakten gewond en zijn per ambulance naar het ziekenhuis afgevoerd. De bestuurder kon geen rijbewijs aan de politie overleggen. De auto reed over de Indira Gandhiweg gaande richting Lelydorp. Door onbekende reden raakte de bestuurder de controle over het stuur kwijt en kwam tegen de zaak aan. Het voertuig werd naar het station gebracht door een sleepwagen. De politie van bureau De Nieuwe Grond heeft de zaak in onderzoek.…[+]
Koninklijke paarden op hol geslagen in centrum van Londen
LONDEN – In het centrum van Londen zijn gisterochtend meerdere paarden op hol geslagen. Op beelden op X is te zien dat de dieren door de straten rennen rond Aldwych. Inmiddels zijn alle paarden gevangen, meldt de politie van de Britse hoofdstad.
Een woordvoerder van het leger zegt tegen Britse media dat zeker vier mensen gewond zijn geraakt. De paarden horen bij de stallen van het Britse koningshuis. Ze zouden zijn losgebroken tijdens een oefening in de wijk Belgravia.
Volgens de woordvoerder ging het in totaal om vijf paarden. Op foto’s en video’s zijn twee paarden te zien, waarvan er eentje onder het bloed zit. De dieren renden in hun paniek tegen taxi’s en een bus aan. Een taxichauffeur vertelt tegen de BBC dat hij drie paarden richting Buckingham Palace zag galopperen. “Het klonk alsof er een auto-ongeluk was.” Volgens de chauffeur stond er een busje onder het bloed bij een hotel met een flinke deuk in de zijkant. “Alle ramen waren kapot, dus ik denk dat het witte paard ertegenaan is gerend.”

Russische onderminister Defensie opgepakt om corruptieverdenking
MOSCOW – Een hooggeplaatste Russische defensiefunctionaris is opgepakt, omdat hij wordt verdacht van het aannemen van steekpenningen. Dat schrijven Russische staatsmedia. Het gaat om Timoer Ivanov, een van de twaalf onderministers van Defensie.
Ivanov werd kort na de invasie van Oekraïne door Rusland al op de sanctielijst gezet door zowel de Verenigde Staten als de Europese Unie.
Het Russische staatspersbureau RIA Novosti schrijft op basis van Kremlin-woordvoerder Peskov dat minister van Defensie Sjojgoe inmiddels op de hoogte is gebracht van de aanhouding van zijn vertrouweling. Voordat hij onderminister werd in 2016, werkte Ivanov al nauw samen met Sjojgoe. Zo was hij vicegouverneur van de regio Moskou, toen Sjojgoe in 2012 gouverneur werd van die regio. Kort daarna volgde hij Sjojgoe naar het ministerie van Defensie. Er zijn geen details bekendgemaakt over de hoogte van de steekpenningen die Ivanov zou hebben aangenomen, en waarvoor.
Ivanov overziet in zijn functie onder meer het vastgoed en de bouwprojecten van het Russische leger, schrijft persbureau AP, en had volgens Russische media ook de bouwprojecten in de Oekraïense havenstad Marioepol onder zich.
Marioepol werd in mei 2022 bezet door Rusland, nadat de havenstad eerst door zware bombardementen grotendeels was verwoest. De Russen begonnen kort na de bezetting van de stad met het bouwen van woonwijken op de verwoeste grond. President Poetin bezocht in maart vorig jaar hoogstpersoonlijk nog zo’n bouwplaats in Marioepol. Eind 2022 kwam Ivanov in het nieuws door een onderzoek van de anti-corruptieorganisatie van de in februari overleden oppositieleider Aleksej Navalny. In dat onderzoek kwam naar voren dat Ivanov een luxeleven leidde, terwijl hij dat volgens zijn officiële inkomen niet zou kunnen betalen. In het onderzoek wordt gesuggereerd dat Ivanov mogelijk flink verdiende aan de bouwprojecten in Marioepol. Het is niet duidelijk of hij om deze reden nu is opgepakt. Er hangt Ivanov een celstraf van maximaal vijftien jaar boven het hoofd.

Rechter onderzoekt belangenverstrengeling vrouw Spaanse premier
SPANJE – Een Spaanse rechter onderzoekt of de vrouw van de Spaanse premier Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, zich schuldig heeft gemaakt aan belangenverstrengeling en corruptie. Justitie verklaart enkel dat er recent een onderzoek naar is begonnen waarover voorlopig verder geen mededelingen gedaan worden.
Spaanse media berichten dat het onderzoek zich richt op contacten van Gómez met particuliere bedrijven die van de overheid geld of opdrachten hebben ontvangen. Zo zou Gómez banden hebben gehad met het Spaanse toerismeconcern Globalia, de eigenaar van onder meer Air Europa. Ze zou in 2020 een rol hebben gespeeld bij overheidssteun aan Air Europa, dat tijdens de coronacrisis in grote problemen kwam en om steun aanklopte.
Gómez was in die tijd chef van een Spaanse stichting. Ze heeft Globalia als sponsor voor de stichting geworven en had contact met de baas van Globalia, Javier Hidalgo. De luchtvaartmaatschappij kreeg eind 2020 475 miljoen euro steun van de regering. Volgens sommige media een buitengewoon hoog bedrag in vergelijking tot de coronasteun aan andere ondernemingen.
Premier Sánchez, die sinds medio 2018 premier van Spanje is, lijkt niet onder de indruk. Hij zei in een reactie vertrouwen te hebben in de Spaanse justitie.

Guyana raised $110.8 million for Gaza
Some $110.8 million was raised through local donations to support humanitarian efforts in Palestine.
The cheque was handed over to President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali at the Office of the President. The fundraising initiative was launched at the National Ramadan Village, and spearheaded by the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, the Muslim Youth Organisation, and the Guyana Islamic Trust.
These funds will be dispatched to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. President Ali, during his remarks, affirmed the country’s commitment to peace and national security.
“This simple but important occasion verifies our credentials globally – that is, Guyana believes in global prosperity, the global family, and in the strength of humanity and unity,” he affirmed. The president said this contribution serves as testimony to the spirit of generosity that permeates Guyanese society. “These resources were raised across all segments of the Guyanese society…and that tells you that Guyana is always united in the process of advancing development, peace, and conditions through which humanity can exist in a fairer and better way,” the president said. According to President Ali, the people of Palestine deserve to live in peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He assured that Guyana will continue to support all global efforts to bring peace to Palestine, putting a stop to this brutal attack on humanity. For the last six months, Gaza has been suffering at the hands of a brutal Israeli assault. Based on the latest reports, the death toll there has climbed to over 34,000. SBB-voorzitter Kappel neemt deel aan AGM-meeting
BADMINTON – De voorzitter van de Surinaamse Badminton Bond (SBB), Dino Kappel, zal deelnemen aan de Annual General Meeting (AGM) van de Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Chengdu, China. De AGM zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag, met het Members’ Forum gepland voor morgen.
De deelname van Kappel aan deze belangrijke bijeenkomst benadrukt de betrokkenheid van de SBB bij de wereldwijde badmintongemeenschap en haar inzet voor de verdere ontwikkeling en groei van de sport, zowel nationaal als internationaal. Tijdens de AGM zal Kappel de belangen van de SBB vertegenwoordigen en deelnemen aan discussies over belangrijke kwesties die de toekomst van de badmintonsport beïnvloeden. Russian deputy defense minister arrested on corruption charges
RUSSIA – A Russian deputy defense minister has been charged with taking a bribe, in Russia’s highest-profile corruption scandal since President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.
Timur Ivanov is suspected of accepting a bribe of 1 million rubles (at least $10,800), Russian state media TASS reported.
He appeared in a Moscow court yesterday, dressed in full military garb as he stood in a glass cage, and was accused of receiving a bribe as part of an organized group while performing contracted work for the Defense Ministry. If convicted, he faces 15 years in prison.
Ivanov, who has been in his post since 2016, is seen as a senior architect of Russia’s war in Ukraine and a close ally of Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu.
The unexpected arrest of an ally of Shoigu may again put pressure on the defense minister, who has been criticized for his handling of the invasion of Ukraine – most forcefully by the Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin in the months before his death last year. Despite setbacks, Shoigu has been kept in his post by Putin.
Ivanov’s responsibilities have included the reconstruction of Mairupol, a city in southern Ukraine reduced to ruin by Russian forces in a months-long siege at the outset of the war. The minister has frequently been seen cutting ribbons on various construction projects in the city – as Russia attempts to put a Potemkin facade on the city it destroyed. His lavish lifestyle has earned him a reputation inside Russia and, with it, the scrutiny of the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF). Maria Pevchikh, chair of the foundation, said Ivanov had “one of the most lucrative jobs that one can have” in Russia’s Defense Ministry, and claimed the invasion of Ukraine has made him far richer.
Last year, Pevchikh told CNN that Ivanov’s wealth – with assets including a historic house in one of Moscow’s most expensive districts – is funded by corruption. Russia’s Defense Ministry did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
Ivanov was sanctioned by the European Union and United States after Russia invaded Ukraine.
But his ex-wife, Svetlana Maniovich, has continued to live a life of European opulence: yachting on the Mediterranean, skiing in the Alps and living in Paris.
In an investigation last year, the ACF assembled a picture of a woman who has seemingly escaped all scrutiny for Ivanov’s role in Ukraine, and the extreme profits he is alleged to have reaped. Drawing on a trove of 8,000 leaked emails, the investigation claimed that Maniovich spent more than $100,000 in a top Paris jewlry store on the famed Place Vendrome in March 2022, while the siege of Mariupol was tightening.

Massive protests in Argentina slam Milei’s education cuts
ARGENTINA – Huge demonstrations have been held across Argentina to protest against education spending cuts.
Students and university professors were joined by the country’s powerful trade unions and opposition political parties as hundreds of thousands rallied against the effect of President Javier Milei’s radical austerity measures on public universities. It was one of the largest in a series of protests the South American nation has seen since the far-right president took power in December.
Aerial footage showed a sea of people occupying the centre of Bueno Aries for hours. Similar scenes were witnessed in several other cities, with organisers calling for a pushback against budget cuts that they say have put universities on the verge of closure. The University of Buenos Aires claimed that more than 500,000 people took part in the protest in the capital alone.
Milei had brandished a chainsaw during his election campaign to symbolise his wish to decimate public spending and shrink the government in the face of serious economic challenges. He has been shuttering ministries, defunding cultural centres, laying off state workers and cutting subsidies in a bid to right the economy. Last Monday, he defended his radical approach as he celebrated the country’s first quarterly fiscal surplus since 2008. “We are making the impossible possible even with the majority of politics, unions, the media and most economic actors against us,” he declared.
The education system in Argentina is considered to be one of the best in Latin America. The public universities are free of charge, with some 2.2 million people studying at the state-run institutions, including many from other countries in the region.
However, Milei has called them bastions of socialism in which students are “indoctrinated”. As part of its austerity policy, his government recently cut the budget of public universities by 71 percent. Meanwhile, Argentina is currently suffering some of the highest inflation rates in the world at nearly 290 percent.
“At the rate at which they are funding us, we can only function between two or three more months,” said Ricardo Gelpi, rector at the University of Buenos Aires, which has produced Nobel Prize winners and many Argentinian presidents. Universities have warned they may be forced to shut down and strand hundreds of thousands of students mid-degree, which has come as a shock in a country that considers free and quality university education a birthright. “We are defending the public, open and free university, which is one of the great achievements of our people and which we will not give up,” said Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Porez Esquivel at the rally in front of the Casa Rosada, the seat of government. “We are defending our right to live in dignity.”

Sportcentrum.
In de U-14-ontmoeting tussen Puwanani en Robinhood liep het volledig uit de hand toen Elshot, trainer van Robinhood, verhaal ging halen bij de scheidsrechter. Hij was het er niet mee eens dat de scheidsrechter direct affloot na de strafschop van Puwanani. Op een gegeven moment werd het scheidsrechterskwartet aangevallen, waarbij ook jeugdspelers van Robinhood trappen hebben uitgedeeld aan de scheidsrechter. Toen het scheidsrechterskwartet naar de kleedkamer werd geleid, rende Elshot van het veld richting de kleedkamer van de scheidsrechter.
Hij werd daarbij vastgehouden door omstanders, waarbij een burger zelfs een schot moest lossen met zijn vuurwapen.

UN rights chief ‘horrified’ by mass grave reports at Gaza hospitals
GAZA – The UN’s human rights chief has said he is “horrified” by the destruction of Gaza’s Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals and the reports of “mass graves” being found at the sites after Israeli raids. Volker Türk called for independent investigations into the deaths.
Palestinian officials said they had exhumed 283 bodies at Nasser, some with their hands tied. It is not clear how they died or when they were buried.
Israel’s military said claims that it buried bodies there were “baseless”. But it did say that during a two-week operation at the hospital in the city of Khan Younis in February, troops “examined” bodies buried by Palestinians “in places where intelligence indicated the possible presence of hostages”. Ten hostages who have now been released have said that they were held at Nasser hospital for long periods during their captivity.
Prior to the Israeli operation at Nasser, staff there had said they were being forced to bury bodies in the hospital’s courtyard because nearby fighting prevented access to cemeteries. There were similar reports from al-Shifa before the first Israeli raid on the hospital took place in November. The Israeli military has said it has raided a number of hospitals in Gaza during the war because Hamas fighters have been operating inside them – a claim Hamas and medical officials have denied.
The war began when Hamas gunmen carried out an unprecedented cross-border attack on southern Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people – mostly civilians – and taking 253 others back to Gaza as hostages.
A spokeswoman for the UN Human Rights Office said it was currently working on corroborating reports from Palestinian officials that 283 bodies had been found in Nasser hospital’s grounds, including 42 which had been identified. “Victims had reportedly been buried deep in the ground and covered with waste,” Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva. “Among the deceased were allegedly older people, women and wounded, while others… were found with their hands tied and stripped of their clothes.”
Mr Türk called for independent, effective and transparent investigations into the deaths, adding: “Given the prevailing climate of impunity, this should include international investigators.” “Hospitals are entitled to very special protection under international humanitarian law. And the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat [not participating in hostilities] is a war crime.”
Last Monday, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Civil Defense force told BBC Arabic’s Gaza Today programme that it had received reports from local Palestinians that the bodies of a “large number” of people who had been killed during the war and buried in a makeshift cemetery in the hospital’s courtyard were moved to another location during the Israeli raid. “After research and investigation, we learned that the occupation [Israeli] army had established a mass grave, pulled out the bodies that were in Nasser hospital, and buried them in this mass grave,” Mahmoud Basal said.
The IDF said that its forces had detained “about 200 terrorists who were in the hospital” during the raid, and that they found ammunition as well as unused medicines intended for Israeli hostages. It also insisted that the raid was carried out “in a targeted manner and without harming the hospital, the patients and the medical staff”.
However, three medical staff told the BBC last month that they were humiliated, beaten, doused with cold water, and forced to kneel for hours after being detained during the raid. Medics who remained at Nasser after the Israeli takeover said they were unable to care for patients and that 13 died because of conditions there, including a lack of water, electricity and other supplies.

Opposition condemns policy of Health minister
The factions of the NDP, the BEP and the NPS on Tuesday urged the government to give Health Minister Amar Ramadhin the boot. The opposition which also urged the government to reject the policy of the minister no longer believes that he can get the job done because he has repeatedly failed to improve the nation’s healthcare. “The nation’s healthcare sector is about to end up in a downward spiral as the public healthcare sector is increasingly being commercialized. The government is incapable of keeping its promises regarding payments within the healthcare sector. The government has also failed to take action aimed at investigating irregularities and to tackle corruption within the healthcare sector. The friends and family policy seriously damages the nation and quality healthcare is no longer guaranteed because of the many uncertainties. We urge the government to investigate things at the Regionale Gezondheidsdienst, the State Health Insurance Fund (SZF) and the BGVS and to take immediate action if irregularities are detected. The government must also take immediate action to keep physicians and nurses from leaving the country and it must also come up with a strategy aimed at addressing the shortage of nurses and doctors.”
The faction of the opposition also condemned the fact that no action was taken although reports indicate that the number of infections of communicable diseases such as hiv are growing at an alarming rate. The BGVS does not have all of the required medication in stock and patients have no other choice than to dig deep in their wallets to buy their medicines. No improvements are made in the pharmaceutical sector which is why many medicines that are listed in the National Medical File are not accessible to patients. Veel Saharastof in Griekenland: ‘Apocalyptisch’
ATHENE – Een dikke, geel-oranje deken leek er over het zuiden van Griekenland te liggen. Bij zonsondergang kleurde de lucht knalrood. Zo’n grote hoeveelheid Saharastof als er gisteren in de Griekse lucht hing, komt niet vaak voor.
Dat wat Saharastof Griekenland aandoet, is niet ongebruikelijk. Ook in Nederland komt het wel eens voor bij een sterke zuidelijke stroming. Maar het zuiden van Griekenland had dus met bijzonder hoge concentraties stof uit Noord-Afrika te maken. Het levert niet alleen intrigerende beelden op; mensen kunnen er ook behoorlijk last van hebben. De hele kleine stofdeeltjes kunnen diep in de longen doordringen. Dat merkten ook de ziekenhuizen in de stad Kalamata en op het eiland Kreta, waar meer mensen dan normaal zich meldden bij de spoedeisende hulp, vooral met klachten aan de luchtwegen.
De overheid had al gewaarschuwd voor het stof en adviseerde vooral mensen met luchtwegaandoeningen of allergieën om niet naar buiten te gaan. Ook werd aangeraden om ramen en deuren gesloten te houden en om niet te gaan sporten in de buitenlucht. Door zandstormen in de Sahara kan zand en stof hoog de lucht in worden geblazen. Daar drijft het mee op de wind. Het zand daalt vaak snel neer, omdat het te zwaar is om lang te blijven zweven. Maar de lichtere stofdeeltjes kunnen duizenden kilometers afleggen.
Stof is niet het enige wat uit de Sahara komt gewaaid. Ook de hitte verplaatst zich: in het westen van Kreta werd gisteren een temperatuur van bijna 37 graden gemeten. Gemiddeld is het daar rond deze tijd een graad of 22.
