Man on trial for drug trafficking

PARAMARIBO – Jino J. Is currently on trial for trying to smuggle 50,380 grams of cocaine. The cocaine which was hidden in car parts such as gearboxes was intercepted by the police at an address located in the Uraniumstraat. The defendant was going to ship the boxes to Hong Kong via Nigeria.

Attorney-at-law Irvin Kanhai requested the release of his client after reminding the court that a witness had testified that a man who is about 60 years old and who only speaks English had sent the boxes abroad. He pointed out that his client does not match the description given by the witness. The attorney explained that his client lived in French Guiana and that he came to Suriname to help his stepfather with the exports.

District Attorney Mirella van Dijk asked the court to deny the request because the defendant had signed all the necessary documents. The defendant claimed that he had been busy with exports for some time.

The judge denied the request because the defendant claimed that he ran the export company. Several witnesses are expected to take the witness stand. …[+]
