DSB beefs up security at ATMs: Many people targeted by skimmers
PARAMARIBO – Many people went to the police these past couple of days because the money that was in their bank accounts was stolen. As it turns out these people were targeted by skimmers. A few weeks ago two skimmers were arrested by the police. After their arrest there were no more police reports about skimmers. But recent reports indicate that skimmers are active again and that the bank accounts of many people were emptied. De Surinaamsche Bank (DSB) announced that various skimming attempts were detected at multiple ATMs in the past couple of weeks. These ATMs have been taken offline. De Surinaamsche Bank has also taken several precautionary measures aimed at protecting its clients. It has beefed up security at its ATMs and it has also lowered the daily limit of the money that can be withdrawn from its ATMs at night to SRD 5,000. In August the Surinamese Bankers’ Association had issued a warning about the activities of skimmers. It urged people who use ATMs to be extra cautious.
