President asks rice farmers for more time

PARAMARIBO – President Chandrikapersad Santokhi met with the nation’s rice farmers last Tuesday and asked them for more time to finish the administrative procedures so that the farmers can receive payment of their compensation at the start of October. The spokesman of the rice farmers, Ashwin Jagmohansingh, told Times of Suriname that the farmers have asked the president to launch an investigation into the fertilizer fraud scheme. The rice farmers who have received fertilizer will not receive any money. Jagmohansingh made it clear that the union members must indicate if they want to wait for their compensation until October.
