Alliance residents are afraid of next spring tide
PARAMARIBO – The residents of Alliance are afraid of the next spring tide which is expected to occur on October 18th. They fear that the dam could collapse again and that this could result in their homes being flooded again. President Chandrikapersad Santokhi visited Alliance on September 4th about two weeks after the natural disaster had hit the region which used to be a plantation.
He made it clear that the excavator had to remain in the region until the end of October so that it can be deployed immediately in case a section of the dam collapses again. The head of state assured the residents of Alliance that the government would provide its full support to them. “Alliance is an agrarian region that could also attract tourists,” said President Santokhi. Commewijne District Commissioner Mohamedsafiek Radjab will make a list of all of the people whose houses and fields were flooded. Meanwhile the dam has already been repaired by a local entrepreneur. On August 20th a section of the dam collapses and the water started flowing to the residential area. The residents suffered material and mental damage. DC Radjab then took action in association with a local entrepreneur, the National Army and the National Coordination Center for Disaster Control.
