At Saturday's rally of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Ashwin Adhin strongly criticized the recovery program that is being carried out by the International Monetary Fund (IMF)...
According to Adhin, the IMF-program failed to provide structural solutions, as it only tackled the symptoms. Adhin who is a former vice president also criticized IMF-executive Anastasia Guscina who was closely involved in the evaluation rounds with the government. “The crocodile tears of Ms Anastasia Guscina from the IMF do not impress us,” said Adhin who pointed out that the IMF-program did not strengthen the production sectors and therefore did not contribute to the sustainable increase of state income. “Insufficient production makes Suriname economically fragile. The IMF came with a weak restructuring. Their cosmetic kangaroo politics failed to solve the structural problems of our production sectors,” said Adhin. Adhin pointed out that when he was the VP under the second Bouterse administration, he had prepared a thorough IMF-program but that he decided to let it go because of the social pressure. That pressure was also fed by the current VHP-led administration that was an opposition party back then. He criticized the VHP for opting in favour of the IMF measures, something that it fiercely protested against. “Subsidies were scrapped in record time without giving any thought to the consequences while inefficiencies continue to exist at the Energy Company Suriname and the State Oil Company.”
