GUYANA – A shooting in the East La Penitence, Georgetown area resulted in the Brickdam Secondary School closing its doors for half of the day.
Kaieteur News was reliably informed that a man was reportedly shot during the incident, which occurred on Freeman Street, close to the school. According to information reaching this publication, the shooting stemmed from the theft of a cellular phone last Wednesday.
It is alleged that the cell phone was reportedly stolen from the son of a well-known shopkeeper in the area and when he confronted the alleged thief, he denied stealing the phone. However, last Thursday morning, the man was reportedly seen with the stolen phone at a popular liming spot. The owner of the phone confronted the man and this led to a confrontation. A teacher of the school shared that around 07:58 hours, she was in her office when she heard a loud explosion that sounded like a gunshot. “When I heard the second gunshot, I ran out of my office and went into the waiting area,” the teacher related. According to the teacher, she then saw a man lying in the yard next door to the school, with injuries to his legs. “I saw some women helping him and it looked like he was shot in his legs,” the teacher said. The man was then rushed to the hospital by paramedics.
Following the incident, a notice was sent out for the school to be dismissed early. Up to press time, there has been no report from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on the shooting incident. (Kaieteur News)
