PARAMARIBO - “The National Democratic Party (NDP) still has not selected any presidential candidates,” said Ramon Abrahams in response to a poll that was conducted recently and which mentioned Chandrikapersad Santokhi,
Jennifer Simmons and Ashwin Adhin as the most important presidential candidates. Deputy Chairman Abrahams explained that this year the main focus for the elections is on the representation of the people and not on the presidency. He also explained that it was decided internally that after the elections the legislators will determine who will become the NDP’s candidate for the presidency. Abrahams made it clear that conducting polls to find out who is currently the most popular candidate from or outside the NDP for the presidency is useless. He explained that the Surinamese election system determines that the president is not elected directly by the people but via parliament or the united people's assembly. “When the NDP wins the elections, we will hold an internal meeting with our representatives in parliament to determine who will become our presidential candidate,” said Abrahams.
