PARAMARIBO - Legislators from the NDP, BEP and the NPS on Monday sent a letter to the chairman of parliament to request an emergency meeting so that they could discuss the alarming trend regarding the a tions of the government.
The elections are just a few weeks away but they have noticed a shocking increase in the number of questionable actions of the government. The legislators from the opposition want the administration of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk to explain its actions and to stick to existing laws and rules. They also mentioned the recent attempt to smuggle gold out of the country with a private jet. As a result of this large scale gold smuggling operations the government loses about $ 300 million each year. The legislators also want to know how and why 113,000 hectares of land was allocated in the western part of Suriname. They claim that there have been many corruption scandals under this administration as contracts are allocated in a nontransparent manner. .
