“Security has been beefed up around the building of the Central Bureau for Civic Affairs (CBB) which is located in the Mr. Jagernath Lachmonstraat,” Mohamed Nasier Eskak, director of the Ministry of Home Affairs (BIZA), told Times of Suriname.
Last weekend the main office of the CBB was burglarized for a second time in a short period.
Eskak pointed out that the security guards have been instructed to make their rounds on the premises every half hour. Officials will also discuss additional measures with the head of the security team.
“Everybody who wants to enter the premises must first report to the security guard,” said the director. Eskak confirmed that several months ago important buildings such as the CBB were guarded by the police but that the extra security guards only guarded the section of the premises where the material for the elections of May 25th was stored. He also pointed out that many security cameras have also been installed. About 600 passports, passport request forms and a laptop were stolen during the recent burglary.
Eskak suspects that it was an inside job. The police will reportedly look at all the footage from the security cameras. There are indications that the burglars received assistance from somebody who is on the security team,” said the director.
