Shortly after the Surinamese Labor Party (SPA) exited OPTSU it found a new home at the National Party Suriname (NPS). This does not come as a surprise because before the SPA decided to join the political ...
bloc known as OPTSU it had already held talks with the green party that is led by Gregory Rusland. The chairwoman of the SPA, Joyce Williams, told Times of Suriname that the NPS was one of the parties that had been approached by the SPA in the months leading up to the elections. But the talks did not progress smoothly. “The SPA eventually decided to choose to work with OPTSU,” said Williams. After the decision to join OPTSU was made, OPTSU officially presented itself and its member parties to the nation. Other sources told Times of Suriname that a month prior to the proclamation of OPTSU,the SPA was already flirting with the NPS. The alliance with OPTSU did not last long because last week the SPA decided to jump ship due to problems within the political bloc.
Other parties did not agree with the decision to let Wayne Telgt, a candidate from the SPA, take the lead on the list of candidates for parliament.
Wi Sranan strongly opposed the candidacy of Telgt and even threatened to exit the political bloc. The SPA responded by exiting OPTSU last Thursday. Last Sunday the NPS announced that it had taken the SPA under its umbrella. The NPS gave union chairperson Marcia Clumper (SPA) the 51st spot on its list of candidates for parliament.
Williams made it clear that she does not mind that she was not put on the list of candidates and that the SPA will give its full support to Clumper.”Our options are limited,” said the SPA chairperson.
