Metal objects that are located at public spots belong to the state and stealing them is punishable by law. Those who are caught will be charged with theft or buying stolen ...
property and will be arrested, locked up and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The police has noticed a rise in the number of thefts of metal objects in the past couple of weeks. These metal objects either belong to the state or a private company or residence. The police have also noticed that thieves are also targeting cables that belong to the Energy Company Suriname. The cables are cut before being taken and sold to metal scrap dealers. The police urge these people to refrain from doing this, as they will eventually be caught and prosecuted. People who notice anything out of the ordinary or who see others stealing metal objects or cables can call the nearest police station or the Command Center via its hotline 115.
