Election Day, May 25th, promises to be an exciting political race between two of the nation’s big-gest parties namely the VHP and the NDP. Both parties have a completely different view on the past ten years.
They both have one thing in common which is that they have each had the chance to run this country. The NDP remains convinced that it did a great job from 2015 until 2020 while the VHP refers to that period as the most destructive periods in the nation’s history. Andre Misiekaba made it clear that there is only one political party that actually brought about visible progress in Suriname and that the NDP is that party. At a campaign rally that was held recently at the Amerindian village of Matta in the Para District Misiekaba urged the Indigenous community to evict the VHP and its chairman who is currently also the president of the Republic of Suriname, president Chandrikapersad, from Office.
“Chan has done nothing. Your days are numbered,” said Misiekaba as he referred to President Santokhi and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk. On May 25th the VHP will find out if it gets to stay in office for five more years or if it has to pack up and leave. Meanwhile the VHP is making it telling voters that the NDP is responsible for pushing Suriname in an economic slump. During a campaign rally that was recently held at Dijkveld in the Wanica District Santokhi once again blames the NDP for all of the problems of the country. Santokhi urged the people the audience to strongly criticize the NDP. “Listen to what they have to say but when they are done talking you must ask them why they destroyed the country.”
