Entrepreneurs do not feel safe in hinterland
PARAMARIBO – Entrepreneurs who work in the hinterland recently made it clear that they no longer feel safe because of the rampant armed robberies that occur in their work areas. “Not a day goes by without a robber hitting a target and the worst of it is that they shoot first at the victims. We also condemn the fact that a woman was recently raped,” said the entrepreneurs who want the government to take more security measures in the hinterland to restore law and order. The entrepreneurs pointed out that the armed robberies become more violent each day and that the perpetrators do not hesitate to ambush and shoot at vehicles. They also pointed out that they will have no other choice but to close for business if no measures are taken. If that happens, the unemployment rate will go up in the hinterland. The entrepreneurs urged the ministers of Defense and Justice & Police to carry out joint operations and to establish checkpoints in the hinterland. “Tourists must also feel safe when they visit the hinterland,” said the entrepreneurs who made it clear that more police posts are needed throughout the hinterland so that the police could respond swiftly to calls about armed robberies. “I am afraid to go all the way to Paramaribo,” said one of the entrepreneurs who added that he wants to ask the other entrepreneurs to hire a professional security firm. …[+]
