No money for new projects
The Santokhi administration will not carry out any new projects but will leave it up to the next administration that will come into office after May 25th, 2025. It has decided to finish the current programs. The ministers of the current administration made it clear that they would have liked to do more but that they can’t due to the lack of funds. For the past four and a half years almost all of the ministries have complained about the fact that they did not get the necessary funds to getting things done. Many projects that were given the green light by the Council of Ministers were not authorized by the Ministry of Finance and Planning. “I wanted to do so much more,” said Regional Development and Sports Minister Gracia Emanuel. Minister Emanuel and her personnel are still working in an improvised building. They moved to the new location after the headquarters which is located at the Van Roseveltkade lost its roof when it was hit by strong gusts of wind. The minister made it clear that the new location is not suitable. She will focus on the renovation of the facilities located in the hinterland, finishing the artificial grass field projects and addressing the promotions of state employees who work at her ministry. Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation Minister Rishma Kuldipsingh also would have liked to have more funds at her disposal to get things done. She is content with the fact that her ministry received more than 75% of its budget especially given the challenges. Minister Kuldipsingh also wants her ministry to move to a new building as the current one is no longer up to code. “Our building is literally falling apart.”
