“Not everyone who has a money card actually needs it”

“Not everyone who has a money card actually needs it,” said Aniel Koendjbiharie, chairman of the foundation that speaks on behalf of people with a disability namely Stichting Wan Okasi. He explained that he was shocked to learn that people who do not have a disability are also on the list of people with a disability.  “We are puzzled by the fact that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing Sozavo does not have its own medical team so that it could screen the people who apply for welfare. The current system enables everybody who has a medical statement  from a doctor to get welfare. Sometimes the state employees who work at the ministry just put their own people on the list,” said Koendjbiharie who added that he has presented several proposals to the ministry but that he has never received any response. Koendjbiharie advised people who do not have a money card yet to open a bank account. Koendjbiharie gave a local bank a list with the names of people with a disability so that they did not have to stand in a long line. The bank simply calls them to sign the papers and pick up their ATM card. According to Koendjbiharie, this system makes it easier for people with a disability to get access to welfare. Unfortunately not everybody seems to be willing to make things less difficult for people with a disability.

“The government spends a lot of money on the Money Card system while it would reduce costs if the people who apply for welfare were to have their own bank account. The problem would be solved within two months. But the government is stubborn and refuses to consider our proposal,” said Koendjbiharie who made it clear that he hopes that people with a disability, senior citizens and people with a chronic disease do not cast their vote on the political parties that form the current administration because then it would be the same story for the next five years. “They must think twice before casting their vote,” said Koendjbiharie.
