Parliament sets election deposit at half a million

Parliament recently decided that the political parties that want to participate in the general elections must pay a deposit  of a little over half a million Surinamese dollars. The political parties that are neither in the coalition nor the opposition and which had strongly rejected the initial proposal to set the deposit at SRD 900,000 made it clear that this is still too much. They had presented their case to the Constitutional Court and the Constitutional Court had ruled in their favor. The political parties once again want to take legal action.  Dharm Mungra from De Nieuwe Leeuw announced that his party and other parties namely  DA’91, DOE and several others are ready to file a lawsuit as soon as

President Chandrikapersad Santokhi has proclaimed the new law regarding the new deposit. The political parties did not rule out presenting their case to the Organization of American States (OAS). They are willing to pay a deposit that is lower than SRD 400,000.
