Public Prosecutor’s Office to prosecute Saya
PARAMARIBO – The Public Prosecutor’s Office on Monday persisted that Jean Mixon alias Saya had imported a car. District Attorney Reshmi Rathipal pointed out that the actual value of the car was not mentioned on the official papers. “There is nothing keeping us from prosecuting Saya. It has been decided that Saya will be prosecuted. This case will not be settled out of court,” said Rathipal who added that the defendant has several businesses. The prosecutor has demanded that Saya be sentenced to 3 years in prison and that he also be given a fine of SRD 750,000. She pointed out that Saya still has to pay his taxes. Defense attorneys Raoul Lobo, Chandra Algoe and Irvin Kanhai pointed out that Saya must be acquitted and that he never should have been prosecuted. Algoe pointed out that Ismael Kalaykhan set things in motion when he sent a letter to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Algoe also pointed out that the letter is full of lies. When Kalaykhan took the witness stand on January 3rd, 2023 it became clear that he is not the director of the nation’s Tax Office.
