Man on trial for deadly stabbing: Prosecutor demands 10 years in prison
PARAMARIBO – Prosecutor Rashmi Chotkoe has demanded that 27-year-old Shaquille L be sentenced to 10 years in prison for the deadly stabbing that claimed the life of 48-year-old Seelochan Lalchand in March 2024. After the defendant had allegedly stabbed the victim in his neck with a sharp object, the victim was rushed to the Mungra Medical Center (MMC) were he died several hours later. The deadly stabbing happened in front of a bar.
The defendant has repeatedly denied having stabbed the victim and claimed that he punched the victim in his neck while defending himself. Lalchand was in the bar and exited the bar after a while. After he had exited the bar he spotted Shaquille talking to his girlfriend so he started yelling while approaching them.
Shaquille took several steps back wards but Lalchand kept walking towards him. When Lalchand attacked the defendant, he evidently hit back before fleeing the scene. Defense Attorney Nibte told the court that her client repeatedly tried to prevent the incident by moving backwards but that the victim kept approaching him and pushing him. The judge told the defendant that blood starting spraying out of the victim’s wound after the victim had been hit by the defendant.
The attack was caught in the security camera but the footage does not clarify if the defendant was armed. The security footage also shows the victim holding his neck after being hit by the defendant. The defendant insists that he was in possession of any sharp objects at the time of the attack. He claimed that he only had the key to his apartment on him. …[+]
