Rough start of new school year
PARAMARIBO – The new school year had a rough start last Tuesday. At many schools teachers were busy enrolling new students, so that those children could also attend classes.
Amanda Fiaman told Times of Suriname that she was happy that she could finally enroll her two children last Tuesday. She had registered her children on August 20th. On September 20th she was told that she could enroll her children on October 1st. “The students were welcomed by the teachers and the teachers introduced themselves to the parents. The parents will be invited to the school for the official introduction,” said Fiaman. Several parents are furious over the fact that they were called on September 30th by the school and that they were told that their children had to go to another school, because the school would not have an 11th and 12th grade this school year. A woman explained that she would have to find a private school bus because her daughter was put at a school that is far from her home. Parents who had their 3-year-old children screened so that they could be enrolled are discontent with the fact that they still haven’t received any official word from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture although they had paid a lot of money for the screening…[+]
