Sea water floods Weg naar Zee
PARAMARIBO – Despite several warnings that appeared in Times of Suriname over the past few days, the Ministry of Public Works failed to fix the dam located at Weg naar Zee, which had many cracks. The worst-case scenario that the farmers had feared unfolded last Wednesday when seawater flowed through the damaged dam and into the fields near the sea. Several farmers have sustained financial losses as a result of the flooding.
While the residents of Weg naar Zee were horrified to see the water flowing freely into their fields and yards, the residents of Alliance breathed a sigh of relief when they realized that they had been spared because their yards and homes were not flooded when the tide rose.
MP Ann Sadie (NDP) from the Commewijne District told Times of Suriname that she didn’t receive any calls from people this time, which means that the dam kept the water at bay in Alliance. She pointed out, however, that the people whose homes were flooded several weeks ago still haven’t been told who will cover the damages, as they can no longer use many of their belongings due to the flooding that occurred several weeks ago.
