Successful Market Linkage Workshop Strengthens Agricultural Sector in Suriname

PARAMARIBO – On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Improving Economies for Stronger Communities (IESC), successfully hosted a Fresh Produce Market Linkage Workshop at the Assuria Event Center.  This workshop is part of USAID’s regional program, the Caribbean Agricultural Productivity improvement Activity (CAPA).

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the agricultural sector to exchange information on ways to enhance productivity and market access for fresh produce in the region.  The primary goals were to share knowledge, foster networking, and strengthen collaboration between local producers and markets. It also focused on improving farmers’ access to finance, implementing best practices for using crop protection products, and securing agricultural inputs.  Participants included policymakers, farmers, buyers, financial institutions, input suppliers, students, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural interventions in Suriname.

The workshop emphasized the need for a cohesive approach to agricultural development, with special attention to empowering local farmers and strengthening the overall supply chain.  Participants engaged in discussions and shared insights on overcoming market access challenges, improving financial inclusion for farmers, and adopting sustainable agricultural practices. Key speakers at the event included the United States Ambassador to Suriname, His Excellency Robert J. Faucher, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries, Anand Ramkisoensing.  They highlighted the importance of agricultural development for economic growth, food security, and the well-being of communities in Suriname and the broader Caribbean region.

Ambassador Faucher underscored the significance of this program in addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.  He further elaborated on the United States’ commitment to collaborating with Suriname and other Caribbean countries to advance sustainable agricultural practices.  “By working together, we can increase productivity and improve market access, which in turn will elevate the living standards of farmers and their communities,” said Faucher. Ramkisoensing emphasized the ministry’s efforts to promote innovation and technology in the agricultural sector.  “This workshop provides a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, which is crucial for strengthening our agricultural sector and creating new economic opportunities,” stated Ramkisoensing.
