PARAMARIBO – The Judicial Intervention Team (JIT) and the National Army recently demolished 3 illegal airstrips in the Pusugrunu region that is located in the Sipaliwini District.

The illegal airstrips were spotted during a reconnaissance mission. The joint team reportedly used explosives to demolish the illegal airstrips last week. Last year 1 illegal airstrip was demolished in the same region. Investigators are still trying to find out who was involved in the construction of these illegal airstrips. Reports indicate that two suspects were taken into custody during the joint operation. Other suspects are reportedly still at large. The Public Prosecutor’s Office made it clear that operations would be carried out regularly in order to detect and demolish illegal airstrips as it wants to tackle transnational drug trafficking activities…[+]
