Waldeck residents are afraid to leave their homes
NICEKERIE – The residents of Waldeck and the surrounding areas reportedly live in fear every day because their dogs are being poisoned by people who want to strike when everyone is asleep at night. The thieves have found a new strategy to steal chickens and ducks. They enter the coop and slaughter the chickens and ducks before taking the meat. The only thing that they leave behind is the heads of the animals that were slaughtered.
The residents of Waldeck are therefore afraid to leave their homes. Shantie Changoer who lives in Waldeck told Times of Suriname that about ten dogs were poisoned in the past couple of days and that the residents make a living out of selling their poultry. After the police station at Waldeck was closed down, the thieves realized that the coast was clear so they moved into the neighborhood.
When the police station was open, police units patrolled the streets and kept the neighborhood safe. Nowadays the residents have sleepless nights. Changoer told Times of Suriname that the district commissioner had already been notified of the situation and that the residents had written a letter to President Chandrikapersad Santokhi,asking him to reopen the police station. The residents who are still waiting for a response from the head of state want to discuss the issue with him during his visit to the Nickerie District next week.
