JAMAICA – The National Works Agency (NWA) will this morning resume work to clear sections of the main road in Junction, St Mary which are being impacted by two major landslides that were caused by persistent heavy rains. Yesterday, a NWA crew worked tirelessly to clear the landslides, which are in the vicinity of Broadgate and Mason Yard near Friendship Gap respectively, which resulted in a halt in the movement of vehicular traffic for the better part of three hours. Communication Manager at the NWA Stephen Shaw said that the work crew was experiencing challenges cleaning and clearing the roadway due to soil, which keeps coming down, making it difficult to keep the roadway open to accommodate single-lane traffic.

He noted that the conditions present some amount of danger, not only to the motoring public but also to work crews. Shaw pointed out that work crews will return to the area today with a view to see what further steps can be taken, which is either to have both corridors fully reopen or to at least try and ensure that motorists are able to traverse the thoroughfare in a single-lane fashion. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for St Mary South East, Dr Norman Dunn, said that the heavy rains have been affecting that section of the parish since last Friday, which has resulted in several houses in the Dover area being flooded.
