PARAMARIBO - The Surinamese Association of Journalists (SVJ) recently condemned an alarming incident that took place at a press conference that was held by the Ministry of Public Works on Friday.
A person who is not a member of the media and who is not known as a journalist evidently interfered when a journalist from a local media company asked questions about the new bridge. This is not an isolated incident because strangers often show up at press conferences to respond to questions from the media in an inappropriate manner. The SVJ claimed that press conferences are an important moment for journalists as they get to ask questions to the government, organizations and companies to get clear answers so that they could be held accountable. It is important to respect these gatherings as a professional setting where journalists get the opportunity to do their job freely. It is unacceptable for groups or people who are not part of the media to show up out of the blue to tick their nose in this professional environment. Their presence and actions disturb the journalistic freedom and create an unhealthy sphere. The SVJ urged the nation to respect the work that journalists do so that these journalists can provide the latest updates to the nation.
